Fishing Lessons

For Father’s Day, Son, Daughter and I gave Husband fishing gear. In the two years we’ve been in this house, Husband has commented repeatedly that he’d like take Son fishing. Growing up, he fished with his Dad and now that we have an Angler’s Dock on the reservoir at the end of our street, he’s been itching to sink his line into the water.

Real Mommy: Reading On and Off the Job

Liz splits her time between raising three children (ages 9, 6, and 2) and working as a middle school librarian. Oh, and she also co-founded Bibliotechies, a site that provides great children’s book reviews and reading lists.

What time do your kids get up in the morning?

On school days my older kids get up around 7:15 and on weekends around 8 am.  Katie wakes up EARLY – before 7am.

Did any sleep with you last night?

NO

Ode to Preschool

Last week, Son “graduated” from preschool. Some kids were moving on to a 5’s program so the school called it a “celebration.” Fine with me. Son received a personalized water bottle (for the beach this summer), a medal (which he covets), and a memorable description of how he will be remembered by the school (something about his curiosity, which I know all too well). Afterwards we ran out to a waiting ice cream truck in the parking lot and then went to the new Crumbs in Westport for monstrous cupcakes.

Monster Moms Like Us

Okay, so let me confess that I’ve never watched “Jon & Kate Plus 8.” But when the US Weekly cover at the CVS counter screamed “Kate Gosselin: Mom to Monster” I had to pick it up. I’ll also confess that I didn’t read the entire story – just flipped to the pictures and read a few captions and callout quotes. Like something along the lines of, “Kate took charge at a birthday party and told all the kids how to use the piñata!” Wow – that’s pretty awful. She does sound like a monster.

Presence of Time

Last week I tried to sneak in a workout before Husband left for work in the morning. I made it through thirty minutes on the treadmill but by the time I hit the weights, my bicep curls were thwarted by an impromptu army battle with Son. What can I say? He pleaded for me to play with him and I opted to sacrifice leg lifts for squatting to peak around corners and race in to save our battalion. I figured these maneuvers counted for something with my thighs. And my son.

Swine Flu in Children – Should you be worried?

Yesterday, as news broke out about increasing cases of Swine Flu in neighboring New York City, I sent my pediatrician, Dr. Jen Gruen of Village Pediatrics, an email asking if they have adequate supplies of Tamiflu. She responded that they had already posted information on their web site about the disease. (See my earlier post about why I love my new pediatrician!)
